The Greene County Soil & Water Conservation District Club recently accepted a check for $2,500 for its outdoor classroom where, for 30 years, Greene County youngsters have learned about wildlife, habitat, conservation, hunter safety and more.
The funds are part of the final disbursement after the dissolution of M & M Divide Resource Conservation and Development (RC & D) in 2014. By Iowa Code, when a non-profit organization dissolves, it must disburse funds remaining to other non-profit organizations. M & M Divide gave $12,400 to projects in the counties it served – Greene, Guthrie, Sac and Carroll counties. The total disbursement to Greene County was $2,916.36.
The SWCD Club is the non-profit leg of the Greene County Soil & Water Conservation District. It is the club that accepts donations from the public that are used to fund scholarship, conservation materials for school, Stewardship Week, and the outdoor classroom. The SWCD organizes the outdoor classroom with funding coming through the club, explained Amber Kenan of the Greene County SWCD.
Greene County sixth graders will attend the outdoor classroom at Squirrel Hollow Park next Thursday, May 14.
“This incredible donation from the RC&D is very thoughtful and we commissioners appreciate it very much. It will be a great help with conservation education and funding the annual sixth grade outdoor classroom,” said Greene County Soil and Water Conservation District commissioner and Conservation Club member Bill Frederick.
